Now that you’ve evaluated your current business situation, set your strategic and functional goals, let’s look at how you have been spending your time.

Tracking Your Time

One of the greatest business skills that you can achieve is the ability to manage your day rather than have your day manage you. This means that you are in full control of how you allocate your time, which ultimately eliminates the presence of surprise, luck, and chance.

Tracking and evaluating how you spend your time can be a powerful way to help you be more productive. Who wouldn’t want to increase their productivity and, potentially, reduce the amount of time working?

Let’s first look at how you currently spend your time. This is like stepping on the scale for the very first time at the beginning of a weight-loss program.

Today’s Action: Track Your Time

Start a new page in your tracking system and write down everything you do throughout the day for the next two days. If you meet with a client, write that down. If you eat lunch, write that down. If you make some cold calls, write those down. If you take a nap, write that down.

Account for all your time in 15-minute increments. For example, at the end of the day, your list may look something like this:

8:00 Morning meditation
8:15 Ate breakfast; read the paper
8:30 Turned on computer, checked email
8:45 Responded to George’s inquiry about my fees
9:00 Read business blogs
9:15 Called Phil to set up an appointment on Thursday; called Sally to move our next appointment
9:30 Made eye doctor appointment
***
4:30 Organized papers on desk
4:45 Answered phone – possible client
5:00 Finished organizing papers on desk

Write down everything for at least two full days. If you have the stamina, track your time for one full week for a more thorough look at how you spend your time.

Make sure you post any questions in the Facebook group. This is where you get the support and guidance to help you succeed in your journey.
